Geotechnical / Geologist - EIT/ Tucson

Western Technologies Inc., established in 1955, has an excellent opportunity in our Tucson, Arizona office for a Materials / Geotechnical Engineer. The ideal candidate will have passed the fundamentals of engineering exam (E.I.T.) and have a primary interest in construction materials testing and special inspection services with willingness to also perform and geotechnical engineering and assist with environmental assessments. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background or interest in construction materials testing and inspections and/or geotechnical engineering.
Duties include, but not limited to, the following:
• Perform sampling and testing of concrete, masonry, grout, asphalt, and soil
• Observe and monitor construction site activities
• Perform special inspection of soil placement and compaction, foundation construction, and full-scale foundation load testing
• Perform special inspection of structural building components including reinforced concrete, pre‑stressed/post-tensioned concrete, reinforced masonry, and post-installed anchors
• Problem solve with job site contractors
• Assist in preparing cost proposals
• Assist in marketing and follow up with Clients
• Review engineering drawings and reports
• Train technicians and inspectors on test methods and proper techniques
• Work with drill rigs and backhoes to sample and classify soils
• Perform and oversee laboratory tests
• Assist in analysis of soil to determine engineering characteristics
• Review aerial photography
• Assist in writing geotechnical reports
• Assist in making recommendations regarding foundation design, soil bearing pressures, slope stability, and lateral earth pressures
• Assist in environmental site assessments
Skills and Requirements – minimum qualifications for the position include:
• Civil Engineer (E.I.T. preferred but not required)
• Have or be able to obtain, certifications including MSHA, ACI Field, ACI Strength, ATTI Field, ATTI Soils & Aggregate, ATTI Asphalt, ICC Structural Special Inspector, OSHA Hazwoper
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
• Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills
• Willingness to learn and accept new challenges
